Author / Publisher Dodonaeus / Plantijn  van Ravelingen Leiden 1608
BookTitle Cruydt-Boeck 1608 volgens sijne laetste verbeteringe. Met Bijvoegsels achter elck Capittel, uit verscheyden Cruydtbeschrijvers: Item in 't laetste een Beschrijvinge vande Indiaensche Gewassen, meest getrocken uit de schriften van Carolus

Description  This book is effectively the Dutch translation of the "Stirpium Historiae Pemptades"  which is Dodonaeus best and last work. Has very old owner entries from: Everdingy antwerp 1628 and from Balthasaris Lydij. The book begins with a fine frontispiece with a view into a fine garden (the Leiden Hortus Botanicus) seen through an architectural gate richly decorated with fruits and plants and 2 medaillon portraits of Dodonaeus and Clusius below, by Willem Isaakz. Swanenburg, and approx. 1470 woodcuts of herbs in text. (8), 1580, (80) pp. Folio Size 24 by 36cm. First edition of this monumental Dutch herbal. The "Cruydt-Boeck", not to be confused with the "Cruydeboeck" first published in 1554, was de facto a translation in Dutch of the "Stirpium Historiae Pemptades Sex, Libri XXX", first published by Plantin at Antwerp in 1583. The "Stirpium" represents Dodonaeus' best and last great work: a monumental botanical study, divided into 6 large sections, each containing 5 books, with classification of the plants in 26 groups which was far superior to all his former classifications. To this translation Joost van Ravelingen, the translator, added considerably. After each chapter he inserted, in smaller print, additional information on the virtue of the plant taken from the "Cruydeboeck" if not present in the "Stirpium", and new information or descriptions of new plants taken from the work of other authors, like C. Clusius, Math. de Lobel, etc. At the end Joost van Ravelingen added a whole new part on exotic plants taken from the works of Clusius, Garcia da Orta (Horta, or de la Huerta), Nic. Monardes, Chr. Acosta, etc. The woodcut illustrations are for the greater part the same as in the "Stirpium", the woodblocks evidently having been taken over by the Plantin House at Leyden, but there were several alterations made and some replacements, while 25 new woodcuts of new plants were added, not counting the 52 new woodcuts in the extra supplement on exotic plants from Asia and America. Rembert Dodoens, Latin Dodonaeus (Malines 1517-1585), was the first great botanist of the Netherlands. Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos.
Condition  Book: Tooled 19thC calf over wooden boards, raised bands on spine. Book has some minor worming (three or four tiny pin holes through several pages) some minor browning (as always). A good copy of a rare and desirable book that gives the impression of not having been used during the last 400 years.

Author / publisher Bibi Salme ( = Emily Ruete ) / Doubleday Page & Company New York 1907
Book Title Memoirs of An Arabian Princess. Translated by Lionel Strachey

Description Book about Omani princess. This book is the genuine( !) autobiography of Princess Bibi Salme  daughter of Sayyid Sai’id Ibn Sultan, ruler of Oman and Zanzibar who escaped from the palace and her country to marry a German merchant.  This book provides a  unique and realistic insight in Zanzibari / Arab / Omani life and culture  in the 19th centur,  the book also has great photo illustrations.  Zanzibar was for centuries ruled by the sultans from Oman in Southern Arabia. All early editions of her work are very difficult to find in good condition.  The Princess married Friedrich Ruete a  German merchant after escaping from Zanzibar via Aden to Germany. She lived  until her death in Germany. In the book she describes her family history, her childhood,  her life in the Sultan's palace, the position of Women in Arabia, arabian suitorship and marriage, the palaces, slavery,  her escape from Zanzibar to marry the man she loved,  the  visit to London in 1875 to her brother the Zanzibari Sultan Sayyed Barghas discussing her inheritance.  The book presents the reader with an intimate picture of life in Zanzibar between 1850 and 1865, and an inside portrait of her brothers Majid bin Said of Zanzibar and Barghash bin Said of Zanzibar, the later sultans of Zanzibar. After the death of her husband Emily Ruete was caught up in the colonial plans of Otto von Bismarck. There were speculations that von Bismarck wanted to install the son of Emily Ruete as Sultan of Zanzibar. The book was republished in recent years.  In 1992 a scientific publication on her life and works  titled "An Arabian Princess Between Two Worlds" was published by Brill in Leiden. There is a permanent exhibition about Emily Ruete in the House of Wonders, the palace constructed by her brother, Sultan Barghash, in Stone Town on Zanzibar.  There is a permanent display of goods belonging to her in the Omani National museum. The University of Leiden (the famous arabist Prof Snouck Hurgronje) inherited the manuscripts and other goods that have belonged to the princess.   Collation: xvi, 227 pages. Interior remains tight, clean and complete.  Book size 23 by 15,5cm. Publishers decorated cloth. Gilt and Silver decoration to front showing a pretty image of the princess. The huge importance of this work by Bibi Salme / Emiliy Ruete has not been fully understood by book collectors of the middle east and Arabia. Author / publisher Dorat & Marillier / Delalain La Haye and Paris 1773 & 1775
Book Title Fables nouvelles

Description Splendid illustrated edition of Dorats fables. The masterpiece of Clement Pierre Marillier (1740-1808). who is considered the inventor and master of this kind of Louis XVI book illustration with (here 99+99) vignettes as head- and tail-pieces. Size:18,3 by 12,4cm. Apparently one plate is missing, otherwise complete. In decorative later binding. According to Fürstenberg, Marillier represents best of all the style of illustration of the period of Louis XVI. Marillier  invented the illustration by vignettes at the head and at the end of short pieces of text in the style of Louis XVI. Marillier's illustrations to Dorat's "Fables" together with those he did for Dorat's "Baisers" are generally considered to be the two masterpieces of 18th century miniature book-illustration Though the publishing date of the book is 1773, the vignettes in part II are dated 1774 or 1775, so presumably this was completed in 1775. . His intricate designs were executed by about 25 of the best engravers of the time. The 1773 edition of Dorat's "Fables" is the first with Marillier's illustrations, and according to the author in his foreword it was enlarged with 24 new fables. It must originally have been published in parts, and obviously not finished before 1775, as several of Marillier's illustrations in the second part are dated 1774 and 1775.  The work contains 4 series of 24 fables, with at the end of the first three series an extra "Conte" added. Page 233 is misnumbered 133. Collation: engraved vignette;XXII;1f;144pages;engraved title;pages145-309;1f.  Printed on paper Hollande. Very good copy with blank  leaves before each print (!),  a little unimportant spotting, repair to blank margin of title page one tiny wormhole in blank margin first couple of pages. There maybe a full page print missing before the second part, however I doubt if it really should be there (based on other known copies).   Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos.
Condition The binding is a beautiful half red Marocco probably from the 19th century. Despite the small defects still a very good copy of a very rare book.  We are happy to provide additional photos!

Author / publisher Paul Ricaut    Briot  / Abraham Wolfgank Amsterdam 1671

Description Third edition in French by Pierre Briot (1660-1709) of the work entitled Present state of the Ottoman Empire (published 1666) written by Sir Paul Ricau. This is a an important work on Turkey. The first English edition was, according to the Journal of Samuel Pepys almost entirely destroyed during the great fire of London.  The work was soon also translated into Italian, German, Polish, Russian and Dutch. There are eighteen beautiful prints in the book: representing Sultan Mahomet Han, emperor of Turkey in 1670, another the carrier of the turban and the page of l'Hasoda in their costumes, another representing midgets and mutes who were very popular at the Ottoman court, another representing the superintendent of the gardens and fountains of the Emperor, and another representing the costumes of the women in Constantinople. Ricaut was an English diplomat who went to Constantinople in 1661 as private secretary to Heneage Finch, third Earl of Winchelsea, who had been appointed ambassador to the Porte. He published in 1663, in his official capacity, the articles of the treaty of peace between England and the Porte. In 1667 he was given the post of consul in Smyrna, where he remained for 11 years. Ricaut's work is nowadays still of great interest to historians; several books have been written about it. Some say that Ricaut's work is superficial and erroneous, but others are of the opinion that careful reading of his book shows that Ricaut distorted the image of the Ottoman Empire to criticize his own society, and suggested that the Ottoman Empire and England were not quite as different as is usually thought.Very good copy. Vellum binding with old leather shelf letters/numbers on spine. Bookplate of William Arthur, Sixth Duke Of Portland (Cavendish Bentinck) 1857-1943, on front pastedown.  Size: 14 by 8cm. The second Duke of Portland was a fanatic book collector, probably the book has been in the family since then. Book has beautiful engraved frontispiece of a  the Sultan receiving the ambassadors with Constantinople in the background, 18 fine engraved folding illustrations of typical Ottoman characters and their costumes, one woodcut illustration of a turban in text. 498, (6) pp.  Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos.

2) Joannes de Laet / Lgduni Batavorum (=Leiden) Elzevir 1633

Book Title 1) Leo Africanus Africanii Descripto IX. lib. Absoluta 2) Persia seu regni Persici Status

Description Two very rare and  important books bound together:  1)Leo Africanus: AFRICANI Descripto IX. lib. Absoluta. With Engraved title page. With early owner signatures on title.  Translated into Latin from the original Italian. Overall a fine copy. Leo Africanus, born Al-Hassan ibn-Wazzani, was born a slave in Granada of African descent. Following the end of the Spanish Reconquest, his family left Granada for North Africa and Al-Hasan received a fine education and entered on a life of travel and adventure. He commenced his travels in 1511, and they were continued till 1517. Leo was the only original authority on the state of Northern and Central Africa, during the period at which he wrote. (Mendelssohn I, p.885). Leo's work remained for centuries a major source on the Islamic world (...) and in particular, on political, economic and social life in North Africa (Encycl. of Islam). On one of his trips he was captured by Christian corsairs and taken to Rome and presented to the Pope, from whom he received patronage and protection. Because of his outstanding literary ability (he had already written a draft of this book in Arabic when he was captured), the Medici Pope Leo X freed him, converted him to Christianity and became his patron. This book, a detailed account of Africa, its trade routes, geography, terrain and people was an exceptionally important source for information on the continent and is generally considered the first book written by a person of primarily African descent. First Elzevir printing, originally published in 1550. 24mo. 800p,14p. (two volumes bound in one, paginated consecutively).  Blockson 101 : "Any edition of Africanus works is rare and is the cornerstone of any collection of African history."  2) Joannes de Laet (1593-1649) Persia seu regni Persici Status variaque itinera in atque per persian cum Aliquot Iconibus Incolarum Duodez. 374 p., 8p  With engraved title and 8 pretty fullpage woodcuts with persian costumes. Description

Content (22)ff-1024pp-(18)ff, 13 prints, index. Brunet,V, 583 This is a very interesting Breda prize binding in vellum probably made by the Parrot bindery of Utrecht. With on the front the Stadholder coat of arms (combination of the arms of the Dutch royal family and the british Royal family) crowned by a closed crown , borne by similarly crowned lions with the order of the garter and statant on a base bearing the motto Je MAINTIENDRAI" The city armoral block depicts a city with a gate and towers, above which are two lions and an angel carrying the coat of arms with three crosses( Saint Andrew crosses).  The ties are missing but probably used to be bright orange.  in 1747 the rector of the latin school (Mr. Hoogeveen) asked stadholder William IV for permision to use his coat of arms.  The blocks to print the arms were made by Isaq Alexander and supposedly ready 1761. These prize bindings were awarded during the end-of-term ceremonies to the youth of the Latin school in Breda. Breda used the arsm of the stadholder because of their close relationship with the family of Organige for centuries.  Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos

Condition Vellum binding little bit shaven otherwise fine.

Kosmotheoros / Cosmotheoros (title spelled in Greek)  ..., sive De Terris Cœlestibus, earumque Ornatu, Conjecturæad Constantinum Hugenium.

Description

First edition of the most famous work of the scientist Christiaan Huygens on the celestial world. Content (2) 144 Including 5 numbered plates.  4to Contemporary brown leather binding. This important book was soon translated in 5 languages.  It contains the controversial argument in favor of extra-terrestrial life, and was based on the Copernican theory of the universe. Huygens further assumed that the earth logically would not be the only planet capable of sustaining life as we know it. The work discusses also  the different movements of the heavenly bodies and how they must appear to the inhabitants of the planets. The dutch scientist Christiaan Huygens was a brilliant mathematician, engineer, astronomer and opticien. Some of his most important work was on the pendulum to regulate clocks and on the improvement of telescope lenses, which led to his discovery of Saturn’s ring. The present work gives a history of this discovery. Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos.

Author / Publisher Otto Vaenius (Otto van Veen 1556-1629) / Antwerpen, Plantin-Moretus, 1660
Title Vaenius Amoris divini emblemata (= Emblems on the Divine Love )

Description Otto van Veen was a painter, draughtsman, and humanist. He is known for running a large studio in Antwerp, producing several emblem books, and for being, from 1594 or 1595 until 1598, Peter Paul Rubens's teacher. His role as a classically educated humanist artist (a pictor doctus) was influential on the young Rubens, who would take on that role himself  After his earlier book of secular love emblems, Otto van Veen published his religious emblem book in Antwerp in 1615. The book contains sixty beautiful (classical inspired) emblems, with figures on the right page, texts on the left; for each emblem, there is a group of quotations in Latin, from the Bible and the church fathers, and three epigrams, in Spanish, Dutch and French. Each of the  emblems, except the first, shows the protagonists Amor Divinus and Anima, Divine Love and the soul, involved in a symbolic action that represents a stage on the soul’s journey towards  heaven or God.Contents: Frontispiece with 60 text engravings and 128  pages with the text in Latin with Dutch commentary. The spanish texts are by Alphonsus de Ledesma  The French text is by Carolus Hattronius and the dutch text is by Otto van Veen. This particular work was quite influential in the years subsequent to its publication and can be found in the important collections of emblem books around the world. Author / Publisher Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680) / Leyden, I. Severinus, B. and P. van der Aa, 1737/ 1738
Title Bybel der Natuure, of Historie der Insecten. Biblia Naturae; sive Historia Insectorum, in classes certas redacta, nec non exemplis, auctoris descripsit Hermannus Boerhaave Latin transl. H.D. Gaubius

Description JAN SWAMMERDAM (1637-80), Dutch naturalist and microscopist; pioneer of entomology and discoverer of red blood cells. He studied medicine at Leiden, and despite his short life and a professional career of only about twelve years, Swammerdam was one of the outstanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. He was a pioneer in microscopic studies, investigating especially the anatomy of insects, his system of classification laid the foundations of entomology. At his death after seven years of illness and scientific activity, he left a mass of papers and reports of investigations, most of which remained unknown until they were published a century later. Considered the most accurate of classical microscopists, Swammerdam was an educated and highly systematic worker who confined his attention to studying relatively few organisms in great detail. Over the period of about six years he devoted much of his energies to exhaustive entomological research. He employed highly innovative techniques; for example, he injected wax into the circulatory system to hold the blood vessels firm, he dissected fragile structures under water to avoid destroying them, and he used micropipettes to inject and inflate organisms under the microscope. Swammerdam's A General History of Insects, was widely recognized as a major work at the time, and in his magnum opus, Bybel der Natuure, he advanced his entomological researches and produced one of the finest collections of microscopical observations ever published. Swammerdam's great work, the Bybel der Natuure, was left unpublished at his death. The manuscript of this, his most important work, passed through several hands before Herman Boerhaave having learned of its existence sought to acquire it. Boerhaave was aware of Swammerdam's genius and determined to acquire his great unpublished book and see it safely through the press. He edited the manuscript and arranged for it to be published 1737/8 in a fine edition of 2 folio volumes, with dual Dutch and Latin text, beautifully printed with titles in red and black, with engraved vignettes, head- and tail-pieces, and 53 fine engraved plates.  "The scientific ambition represented by Bybel der Natuure is astonishing. Even today it shocks by its audacity. In its scope and depth, Swammerdam's work far exceeded any other book of the time", and laid the foundations of modern biology. It is the "finest one-man collection of microscopical observations", and the book is consulted by naturalists to this day.   Folio. 2 text vols. and 1 plate vol., text vols.: (62),550[=546]; (4),551-910,(36 index), 124(uitlegging der tafereelen)p., engr. title-vignettes, Latin and Dutch juxtaposed text, plate vol.: 53 engr. plates (52 fold.) by J. Norman Library 2037: "Despite a scientific career that lasted only a dozen years, Swammerdam was one of the outstanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. His most remarkable work was in the field of insect anatomy, which he undertook in order to disprove still-current Aristotelian notions (which he opposed upon religious grounds) that insects lack internal anatomy, develop by metamorphosis (sudden and complete transformation) and arise from spontaneous generation. By refining his techniques of micro-dissection and injection to the point where he could use them on the smallest and most delicate anatomical parts, Swammerdam was able to illustrate for the first time the complex internal structures of insects, including their reproductive organs; and to demonstrate the gradual development of an insect's adult form throughout all its larval stages. These observations are "indubitably the foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects" (Cole, p.285). In addition, Swammerdam performed valuable investigations of crustaceans, mollusks and frogs, and was the first to prove experimentally that muscles do not increase in bulk when contracted via nerve stimulation. The Biblia naturae, Swammerdam's major work, was published fifty-seven years after his death by Herman Boerhaave, who assembled it from unpublished manuscript materials integrated with a slightly revised version of Swammerdam's Historia insectorum generalis (1669). Boerhaave's biography of the author, which prefaces the work, remains the chief published source of information about Swammerdam's life. The book's fifty-three copperplates were prepared under Swammerdam's direction from his own drawings."

Title  Astronomische oefening, verhandelende de beginselen der sterreloopkunde

Description

Second edition of this rare schoobook. The book is structured in the form of questions and answers and illustrated with 24 beautiful handcoloured prints:..  The work is partly based on the book beginselen der waare sterrekunde (Haarlem, 1748).  A nicely illustrated introduction to astronomy and covers all aspects of astronomy on an elementary level, and the plates show a chart of the solar system with three comets, more detailed views of the moon, some planets and comets, the northern and southern celestial hemispheres, diagrams explaining eclipses, the seasons, etc. Volume one ends with three pages of advertisements by the publisher. In the foreword, the anonymous author notes that he wrote the book due to the success of the anonymous Geographische Oefening  that Houttuyn published in 1758. He also notes that its content is based largely on J. L. Rost’s 1748. Beginselen der waare Sterrekunde . The author gives only one clue to his identity: a reference (vol. 2, p. 93) to his own article on the use of globes, suggesting that the present book was written by Jan de Vries (and so perhaps the Geographische Oefening  as well).Previous owner signature G.F.J. Author / Publisher Balthasar Bekker (1634-1698) / Deventer Marinus De Vries 1739
Title

De Betoverde Weereld zynde een grondig  ondersoek van 't gemeen gevoelen aangaande de geesten derselver aart en vermogen bewind en bedryf

Description In De Betoverde Wereld Bekker denies the existence of sorcery, magic, possessions by the devil, and of the devil himself. Extremely rare 4to edition of this important book (not in NCC). Balthasar Bekker was a Dutch precursor of rationalism; born at Metslawier Mar. 30, 1634; died in Friesland June 11, 1698. He studied at Groningen under J. Alting and in Franeker, where he was rector of the Latin school, was made doctor of theology, and preacher in 1666. He believed that spirits, either good or bad (the existence of which Bekker did not deny), could exercise no influence over human affairs; nor should seemingly paranormal effects be attributed to witchcraft. The work has been very influential and was a great success. It was soon translated in German, French and English. 18th century sharkskin notebook with gilded silver ornaments and gilded silver writing pen and includes the arms of the town of Rotterdam on the fornt and back.

18e eeuws notitieboek van Roggenhuid / haaieleer met vergulde zilveren appliques en wapen van Rotterdam

Description Extremely rare Dutch 18th century notebook with "sharkskin binding" and gilded silver furniture (=ornaments), gilded hinges and gilded writing pin. Sharksin bindings have only been used for bibles, almanacs and note books.  Books in sharskin bindings and with silver fittings were luxuruous gifts e.g. from a town, a province or the national government. The book contains the arms of the town of Rotterdam. The writing pen can be unscrewed (which is also very unusual). The pin is used to close the book and when removed can be used for writing.  The text can later be wiped off again. The spine is also unusual: It is flat (no raised cords) and there are no lines on the spine however there are four flower ornaments from gilded silver. No identifiable silvermarks have yet been found, however the book and silver work can be dated 18th century. The silver ornaments are of very fine quality. Research into sharkskin bindings has shown that the leather is not from a shark but it is from an animal and has probably been processed one way order e.g. by letting seeds germinate in the leather.. (note: As a collector of eastern arms I have seen the same type of leather on some Persian gun powderboxes from the 18th century.) Size 13 by 7,5cm. Click on the photo and use "<" button below to see all the photos!
Condition Fine condition. Internal notebook has been replaced over time.

Description Dutch almanach   a binding of black "sharkskin" and with silver fittings and the silver writing pin.The pin is used to close the book and when removed can be used for writing. Apart from an almanac the book contains several specially prepared pages that can be used for writing with a silver pen. he text can later be wiped off again.Sharksin bindings have only been used for bibles, almanacs and note books.  Books in "sharkskin" bindings and with silver fittings were luxuruous gifts e.g. from a town, a province or the national government. The silver clasps contain the arms of the province of Holland. The spine is also unusual: It is flat (no raised cords) and there are no lines on the spine. No identifiable silvermarks have yet been found, however the book and silver work can be dated 18th century. The silver ornaments are of very fine quality. Research on sharkskin bindings in general has shown that the leather is not from a shark but it is from an animal and has probably been processed one way order e.g. by letting seeds germinate in the leather (note: As a collector of eastern arms I have also seen the same type of leather on some Persian gun powderboxes from the 18th century.) Size 8,5cm  by 5cm. The leather has been rather worn due to use over many years. The almanach has probably been replaced several times. The notbebook contains some inscriptions form the mid 19th century. But again this binding and its silverwork originate from the eigthheenth century.
