Print Title Asiae VI TAB: from the atlas Tabulae geographicae Ptolemeus : map of Arabia Middle East (this map is 420 years old)

Description This beautiful and important map must be present in every serious collection of maps of Arabia. Map in very good condition. Hand coloured with a beautiful 16th century cartouche and fine calligraphy.  Size: 33,3 by 47,4cm. The map from Mercator shown is based on the map dated 150 AD by Ptolemy the famous Greek astronomer and geographer. The maps which bear Ptolemy's name werte compiled much later  based upon his notes and there is therefore room for some different interpretations with reagards to locations of cities and other features. For example: After rounding Asabon (Ra's Musandam) Ptolemy mentions  a hidden harbour (Kryptos Limen) that can be idenitfied with Muscat. Next comes Korodamon that has been suggested to be both Ras Al Hadd and nearby Khor Jeramah etc.  The Greeks had knowledge of the topography of this region through trade links (e.g. incense) and military expeditions (Alexander).  Condition  Orginal handcolouring. Map in very good condition. Very attractively priced
