Description Early tortoise and silver binding. Size 9cm by 14cm and 5cm thick. The silver locks and hinges and the tortoise are typical of the 1670to 1700 period. Probably the psalms have been replaced by a more modern version in 1775.  Condition: front cover: fine; The hinge on the top of the frontcover is to connect a (silver) chain or cord. Each of the locks and hinges contains silvermarks.
Condition This 17th century tortoise and silver (schildpad en zilver) bookbinding  for the dutch 1688 Statenbijbel is in very good condition.  The psalms have been replaced by those issued in 1773. There is a tiny (unimportant) hairline in the tortoise of the spine. There are multiple silversmith marks on the hinges (has design of a fishtail? and a head ( A fish or a dolphin??) see photo.
References  References: for the design of the silver hinges/locks  and the tortoise see: Zondags Zilver by Bernard van Noordwijk page 171 (binding on a Tora similar to ours owned by the Koninklijke Bibliotheek). Tortoise was introduced during the second half of the 17th century (see Storm van Leeuwen), therefore this is an early example of this type of binding..

Min in 't Lazarus-huys. : Blyspel naar Los locos van Lope de Vega Carpio]. Amsterdam, J. Vinckel, 1674

Description Very  rare first edition of this collection of 4 of his works in 1679 including the important 1674 edition of the Min in t'Lazarus huis. Fockenbroch was a dutch poet and play writer. Frontispiece engraving 208; 309-447; 223; 112; 77; viii. Dutch text.. He was practicing as a physician for the poor. It is assumed that he left in 1668 for Ghana (West Guinea) because he run into financial difficulties. He arrived in September of that year in Elmina (a center of gold exploration / trade and slavery) and became a tax collector, he died there at the age of 30. One of his works was a translation of  Virgil in verse and he wrote poetry in the satirical and burlesque style much appreciated at the time, but judged by 19th century critics to be merely rude and indecent, and consequently banned from serious literature. His popular comedy "De Min in 't Lazarushuis" caused quite a scandal even at the time when performed at Amsterdam in 1674.  This last work has always been added to this work from one earlier (1674)  printed editions (on different paper)!! There are copies know from the 1674 Alkmaar edition and two variant versions of  the 1674 Amsterdam edition. In the book we offer the second variant of the 1674 Amsterdam edition has been used. Also the title page has been replaced by a (1679) frontispiece engraved by Boagaert matching the other engraved frontispieces in the book. Two other similar copies are known, so the book  is complete.  In modern times there has been a lot of renewed interest in the works of Focquenbroch (several reprints of works) and one of his plays has been performed again . There is also a previous owner ex-libris from "Comtesse Jean grand Jean Perrenod".  Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos
Condition Condition: A very attractive book. The first works are in mint condition, however the last work that has been printed earlier and was presumably printed on lower quality paper and has browned. Overall a complete copy of the first edition of the "alle de wercken"(collected works)  in good condition and in the original vellum binding.

Author / publisher Paul Ricaut    Briot  / Abraham Wolfgank Amsterdam 1671

Description Third edition in French by Pierre Briot (1660-1709) of the work entitled Present state of the Ottoman Empire (published 1666) written by Sir Paul Ricau. This is a an important work on Turkey. The first English edition was, according to the Journal of Samuel Pepys almost entirely destroyed during the great fire of London.  The work was soon also translated into Italian, German, Polish, Russian and Dutch. There are eighteen beautiful prints in the book: representing Sultan Mahomet Han, emperor of Turkey in 1670, another the carrier of the turban and the page of l'Hasoda in their costumes, another representing midgets and mutes who were very popular at the Ottoman court, another representing the superintendent of the gardens and fountains of the Emperor, and another representing the costumes of the women in Constantinople. Ricaut was an English diplomat who went to Constantinople in 1661 as private secretary to Heneage Finch, third Earl of Winchelsea, who had been appointed ambassador to the Porte. He published in 1663, in his official capacity, the articles of the treaty of peace between England and the Porte. In 1667 he was given the post of consul in Smyrna, where he remained for 11 years. Ricaut's work is nowadays still of great interest to historians; several books have been written about it. Some say that Ricaut's work is superficial and erroneous, but others are of the opinion that careful reading of his book shows that Ricaut distorted the image of the Ottoman Empire to criticize his own society, and suggested that the Ottoman Empire and England were not quite as different as is usually thought.Very good copy. Vellum binding with old leather shelf letters/numbers on spine. Bookplate of William Arthur, Sixth Duke Of Portland (Cavendish Bentinck) 1857-1943, on front pastedown.  Size: 14 by 8cm. The second Duke of Portland was a fanatic book collector, probably the book has been in the family since then. Book has beautiful engraved frontispiece of a  the Sultan receiving the ambassadors with Constantinople in the background, 18 fine engraved folding illustrations of typical Ottoman characters and their costumes, one woodcut illustration of a turban in text. 498, (6) pp.  Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos.

Author / Publisher STOOPENDAAL, Daniel & SCHERM / ad 1) Amsterdam, Nicolaus Visser 1685 or 1720 ad 2) Amsterdam Nicolaus Visscher late 1600´s
Title 1) Verscheyde schoone en vermaakelyke gezigten, in de hofstede van Clingendaal gelegen by 's Gravenhage  (title missing) 2) Generale en particuliere gezigten van de heer van st. Annalands hofstede, genaamt Clingendaal (2 prints missing)

Description Clingendaal is the most beautiful park in The Hague (between Wassenaar and Benoordenhout).  The fine prints in our book show how the estate / gardens looked like by the end of the 17th century. During the second world-war the head of the German occupational forces (Arthur Seyss-Inquart) and his command were located in Clingendaal and the surrounding area turned into a huge fortress. After the war the manor is appropriately used by Nederlands Instituut Voor Vredesvraagstukken (Dutch Institute for Peace Issues) and some of the big bunkers are used as wine-cellar... The park also has the oldest Japanese garden in Europe. Our book has been bound in contemporary half roan, marbled boards 4to. With 32 etched plates, of which 24 by Daniel Stoopendaal and 8 by Laurens Scherm. Rare collection of striking prints depicting the garden of the estate Clingendaal (or Clingendael) near The Hague, designed by Philips Doublet (1633-1707) in the Le Nôtre, or Baroque style. The missing title-page has been replaced by the (damaged) title-page of a different work: Generale en particuliere gezigten van de heer van st. Annalands hofstede, genaamt Clingendaal, of which also two large views are added. The missing title added in Photostat. There are two editions of this rare book: 1685 and 1720. According to Picarta only 4 copies  known in total for the combined two editions in Dutch public libraries. The 1720 edition is only available in the library of the university of Wageningen and the 1685ish edition is only available with the University Hogeschool library of Amsterdam (2 copies one incomplete) and Meermanno Westrenianum.  A complete copy of the second book "Generale en particuliere gezigten van de heer van st. Annalands hofstede, genaamt Clingendaal" consists of a title page and only 4 prints. The only copy in the Dutch public libraries we located is in the KB. Our copy contains the title page and two of the four prints. Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos
Condition Summarising: we have  an almost complete copy of the rare "Vermaakelyke gezigten in Clingendaal" (only title missing) and we have 3 of 5  damaged prints of an even rarer book " generale en particuliere gezigten van Clingendaal". Great item for bookcollectors in the area in Wassenaar / The Hague.
