Title No title under the print (print similar the one with title Gestrande walvis bij Berckhey, 1598, Stranding van een walvisch van 70. voeten lan

Description Engraving after the stranded whale between Katwijk and Scheveningen by Jacob Matham / Goltzius. 27,5 x 33,6 cm. (Hollstein 1). Our version was engraved by van der Gouwen and is a very rare  version without the text and without the erected whale-penis. The Matham/Goltzius print has been a model for whale prints during the seventeenth century. In 1602 Saenrdam produced a similar but heavily decorated whale print. The landing of a whale on the beach has always been a big event in Holland. The fascination had different elements: scientific/natural history, economic and superstition. Thousands of people came to the beach to see the whale or to study it (e.g. measuring/drawing it). The whale products also represented significant economic value. However many people saw the event of a whale on the beach as an evil sign that something bad was going to happen to the country.  A whaling print can be found in Bor Chrz., P. Oorsprongk, begin, en vervolgh der Nederlandsche oorlogen and in Grotius, H. Nederlandtsche Jaerboeken en Historien. However our version is a prototype for those prints. Condition: folding in middle otherwise fine.  Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos
Condition Folding in Middle but otherwise fine. Has some blank margin.
