Title 't Groot Hoorns, Enkhuyzer, Alkmaarder en Purmerender liede-boek (First AND Second volume in one!!!) Rare to find both volumes.
Description Fine miniature songbook (incl. many wedding and drinking songs) . We are offering both volumes in one bookbinding. (note: often only the first volume is offered). Our book is in fine clean / bright condition and includes some musical scores. The binding is also very good, no loose pages Size  32mo (6,9 x 5 cm.). old green vellum (small piece missing).  Rather crudely desinged  vignette with musical instruments on title-page, and full-page woodcut with angel with trumpet and crown on verso. Includes several pages with musical scores. 312p (followed by 8p register); 312p, (8) pp. Rare edition in fine condition of this famous miniature songbook. These type of songbooks were often called mopsje and given as a wedding present. Some mopsjes have luxury bindings with silver locks, tortoise shell or silk. The book we offer is in a simple green vellum binding, but in unusual good condition. Volume 1 of this book has already been issued before 1700, however only a couple of copies are known today. During the 18th century several editions followed and the second volume was added. This collection, contains songs from Hoorn, Enkhuizen, Alkmaar and Purmerend, with Edam (Edummer) added on the title of the second volume. The book consists of wedding and love songs, pastoral and drinking songs. There is also a Sinterklaas song: Lof van Sint-Nicolaas.
Condition

Apart from a small piece of vellum missing and the title page being a bit smudged it is a very fine copy of the famous miniature songbook.

For reference see e.g Louis W. Bondy 1981 Miniature books p 28-p 29: Songbook for the towns of Hoorn Enkhuysen and Alkmaar containing many beautiful wedding songs. Their text is frequently very outspoken and free although never lacking charm.

18th century sharkskin notebook with gilded silver ornaments and gilded silver writing pen and includes the arms of the town of Rotterdam on the fornt and back.

18e eeuws notitieboek van Roggenhuid / haaieleer met vergulde zilveren appliques en wapen van Rotterdam

Description Extremely rare Dutch 18th century notebook with "sharkskin binding" and gilded silver furniture (=ornaments), gilded hinges and gilded writing pin. Sharksin bindings have only been used for bibles, almanacs and note books.  Books in sharskin bindings and with silver fittings were luxuruous gifts e.g. from a town, a province or the national government. The book contains the arms of the town of Rotterdam. The writing pen can be unscrewed (which is also very unusual). The pin is used to close the book and when removed can be used for writing.  The text can later be wiped off again. The spine is also unusual: It is flat (no raised cords) and there are no lines on the spine however there are four flower ornaments from gilded silver. No identifiable silvermarks have yet been found, however the book and silver work can be dated 18th century. The silver ornaments are of very fine quality. Research into sharkskin bindings has shown that the leather is not from a shark but it is from an animal and has probably been processed one way order e.g. by letting seeds germinate in the leather.. (note: As a collector of eastern arms I have seen the same type of leather on some Persian gun powderboxes from the 18th century.) Size 13 by 7,5cm. Click on the photo and use "<" button below to see all the photos!
Condition Fine condition. Internal notebook has been replaced over time.

Author / Publisher Tieleman van der Horst and Jacob Polley / Amsterdam, Petrus Schenk 1757 - 1774.
Title Theatrum Machinarum Universale Of Keurige Verzameling van verscheide grote en zeer fraaie Waterwerken, Schutsluizen, Waterkeringen, Ophaal- en Draaibruggen.

Description Rare copy with both volumes and all the plates (40 double plates and 7 folding plates). Second edition of both volumes of a very detailed set of eighteenth-century Dutch waterworks, with the accompanying letterpress descriptions and notes. It includes locks, sluices, bridges, pumps, pile drivers, an ice-breaker, an elaborate water-bailing mill and more. Most of the plates measure about 45 x 54 cm, with the folding ones about 52 x 76 cm. The half-title, probably intended to cover both volumes, gives the subtitle "Groote Waterwerken." Volume one (by Horst) and volume two (by Polley) were first published by Petrus Schenk II in 1736-1737. Since the publication apparently aimed to show off the most up-to-date Dutch hydraulic and civil engineering, most of the works shown were built around 1730. The drawings are so detailed and give such a clear picture of how the mechanisms functioned that one could use them to reconstruct the works shown. The present 1757 edition of volume one is sometimes found with the 1737 edition of volume two, and the present 1774 edition of volume two with the later undated edition of volume one. Author / Publisher Marin / Paris Chez Tilliard 1758
Title Histoire de Saladin, Sulthan d'Egypte et de Syrie, avec une Introduction, une Histoire abregee de la Dynastie des Ayoubites fondee par Saladin

Description

The first edition of Marin's celebrated history of Saladin. Very rare: only one copy in the NCC. Drawing from the Crusading chronicles, Schulten's edition of Baha-ed-din, and a Parisian Arabic manuscript of Ibn-el-Athir's Atabegs, Marin weaves one of the earliest and most informed printed histories of the great Moslem general. By contemporary standards his scholarship was excellent, but the work was somewhat lost in obscurity and was not translated. It did, however, achieve significant enough recognition to earn him the title of Royal Censor. 12mo, 2 volumes (size 16cm) , [xvi + 464pp] & [518pp.] + 3 folding plans. Bound in contemporary mottled calf, gilt spines, morocco labels. All edges gilt. Spine and corners rubbed with some wear at the extremities.  Interior is clean and fresh. Description

Content (22)ff-1024pp-(18)ff, 13 prints, index. Brunet,V, 583 This is a very interesting Breda prize binding in vellum probably made by the Parrot bindery of Utrecht. With on the front the Stadholder coat of arms (combination of the arms of the Dutch royal family and the british Royal family) crowned by a closed crown , borne by similarly crowned lions with the order of the garter and statant on a base bearing the motto Je MAINTIENDRAI" The city armoral block depicts a city with a gate and towers, above which are two lions and an angel carrying the coat of arms with three crosses( Saint Andrew crosses).  The ties are missing but probably used to be bright orange.  in 1747 the rector of the latin school (Mr. Hoogeveen) asked stadholder William IV for permision to use his coat of arms.  The blocks to print the arms were made by Isaq Alexander and supposedly ready 1761. These prize bindings were awarded during the end-of-term ceremonies to the youth of the Latin school in Breda. Breda used the arsm of the stadholder because of their close relationship with the family of Organige for centuries.  Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos

Title

De Betoverde Weereld zynde een grondig  ondersoek van 't gemeen gevoelen aangaande de geesten derselver aart en vermogen bewind en bedryf

Description In De Betoverde Wereld Bekker denies the existence of sorcery, magic, possessions by the devil, and of the devil himself. Extremely rare 4to edition of this important book (not in NCC). Balthasar Bekker was a Dutch precursor of rationalism; born at Metslawier Mar. 30, 1634; died in Friesland June 11, 1698. He studied at Groningen under J. Alting and in Franeker, where he was rector of the Latin school, was made doctor of theology, and preacher in 1666. He believed that spirits, either good or bad (the existence of which Bekker did not deny), could exercise no influence over human affairs; nor should seemingly paranormal effects be attributed to witchcraft. The work has been very influential and was a great success. It was soon translated in German, French and English. The consistory of Amsterdam instituted a formal process against him, and he was deposed July 30, 1692. This book is bound in contemporary calf-backed paste-paper decorated boards. Spines gilt in compartments, banded, titles on red leather labels. There is a little wear on spine and boards. Occasional browning of pages. [12], 36, [16], 146, [2]; [8], 282, [2]; [8], 201, [3]; [6], 314, [2] pp. with Large folding portrait of Bekker moved from space at end of life of Bekker to the front of volume 1 by Zacharias Webber, Daniel van Dalen & P. van Grust  Vignette by J. Author / publisher Dorat & Marillier / Delalain La Haye and Paris 1773 & 1775
Book Title Fables nouvelles

Description Splendid illustrated edition of Dorats fables. The masterpiece of Clement Pierre Marillier (1740-1808). who is considered the inventor and master of this kind of Louis XVI book illustration with (here 99+99) vignettes as head- and tail-pieces. Size:18,3 by 12,4cm. Apparently one plate is missing, otherwise complete. In decorative later binding. According to Fürstenberg, Marillier represents best of all the style of illustration of the period of Louis XVI. Marillier  invented the illustration by vignettes at the head and at the end of short pieces of text in the style of Louis XVI. Marillier's illustrations to Dorat's "Fables" together with those he did for Dorat's "Baisers" are generally considered to be the two masterpieces of 18th century miniature book-illustration Though the publishing date of the book is 1773, the vignettes in part II are dated 1774 or 1775, so presumably this was completed in 1775. . His intricate designs were executed by about 25 of the best engravers of the time. The 1773 edition of Dorat's "Fables" is the first with Marillier's illustrations, and according to the author in his foreword it was enlarged with 24 new fables. It must originally have been published in parts, and obviously not finished before 1775, as several of Marillier's illustrations in the second part are dated 1774 and 1775.  The work contains 4 series of 24 fables, with at the end of the first three series an extra "Conte" added. Page 233 is misnumbered 133. Collation: engraved vignette;XXII;1f;144pages;engraved title;pages145-309;1f.  Printed on paper Hollande. Very good copy with blank  leaves before each print (!),  a little unimportant spotting, repair to blank margin of title page one tiny wormhole in blank margin first couple of pages. There maybe a full page print missing before the second part, however I doubt if it really should be there (based on other known copies).   Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos.
Condition The binding is a beautiful half red Marocco probably from the 19th century. Despite the small defects still a very good copy of a very rare book.  We are happy to provide additional photos!
