Description Important dutch book on Pharmacy. 3 parts in 1 vol. Sm. 8vo. Contemp. vellum pages loosening and a few spots  but complete. With engraved front 512, 120 p. Steven Blankaart (1650-1704), physician at Amsterdam, may be regarded as one of the most important Dutch physicians and medical authors. He was the first to introduce Cartenianism into medical science. Several editions have been issued, however of each edition only very few copies have survived (according to STCN only 1 incomplete copy in the Dutch institutional libraries for this edition). Description This important work on fencing  was in the first place meant to educate the young noblesse and contains a description of all the necessary (basic) principals needed for the art of fencing explained in a clear and understandable manner, illustrated with numerous fencing-positions. Collation: (6), XII, (2), 92, (2), IV, 57 pages, with 73 copper-plates and 1 copper-vignette.  Book size: 19,5*23,5. On the first blank is the old exlibris of the Comte Nicolas d'Eszterhazy, a very famous Austrian family. -- "De la Bibliotheque du Comte Nicolas d'Eszterhazy" with his coat of arms.  The first plate shows the author, M. de Saint-Martin, who was officier de Cavallerie et Maitre d'Armes Imperial in Vienna. Description Engraved townplan and view  of the town Amersfoort from Civitates Orbis Terrarum by Braun and Hogenberg. Rare early  edition (without the crown and foliage around the arms of Amersfoort!). The text on the back of the map indicates that the map has been produced by Gijsbert Cloeting at the request of Michael ab Isselt it also contains page number 15. . The details of the bottom view are considered even more accurate than the plan above. The map has been engraved by Hogenberg. Later editions also have an extra text paragraph updating the history to 1629.  The map is not colored. Please note that the far majority of colored Braun and Hogenberg maps have been colored in modern times,  in fact in most cases genuine (crude) old coloring of these type of maps is not very appealing to most buyers.... Approx. 36 x 37 cm (incl profile: ca 11 x 37 cm).  Click on the photo and use "<" button under the photo to see additional photos

This went through many editions remaining a definitive work for over a century and highly praised by Linnaeus. Description This rare book/edition consists of two parts: The first part is an interesting description of Amsterdam and the second part describes the tariff rates for import and export of all kinds of goods and merchandise imposed by the Seven Dutch United Provinces. Also included are the tariff rates imposed in the Sont (entrance of the Baltic sea) and the last ordinances on the subject, dated 1652 and 1655 This is the best edition with running text instead of dialogs and 20 instead of 17 plates (showing the most important buildings of the town, such as the town hall, the stock exchange, the main churches, the four city gates, the buildings of the Dutch East India Company, the Portuguese Synagogue, etc.; the plates with the flags are from Fokkens's. The plates  Size 10 by 16 cm. Description WALSH, EDWARD (1756–1832), physician, born in 1756 in Waterford. Failed attemptby British and Russians  to crush the Batavian Republic and restore the stadholderate to the House of Orange. From 1795 the anti Orangist Patriots Controlled Holland (later called the Batavian Republic)  until 1806. Stadhouder Willem V of Oranje fled in january 1795 to England. After the revolution in 1789 the French wanted to expand their territorium which was strongly opposed by teh British and the Russians. French troops were placed in Holland since1795. By august 1799 approx 200 British warships appoached the coast of North Holland (province of Noord Holland). The Batavian general Daendels had 8000 troops (Largely German and Belgian mercenaries). On august 30 Daendels had to retreat to the town of Alkmaar. Two days laters a large British army arrived. On Sept 10 the Batavian general Daendels and french soldiers attacked the invaders. This French/Batavian aassault was stopped resulting in 2000 dead of which only a few hundred  British troops. Eventually  80.000 soldiers were involved in this war in North Holland. With a very fine double-page map of Noord Holland and 7 views of the places occupied by the British and Russians   Contents (4),164 pp. The fine views depict: Den Helder, Oude Sluis, Schagen, Bergen, Alkmaar, Egmont aan Zee and Egmont op den Hoef. Half leather binding. Spine damages. A bit of foxing to some of the plates, as always.

Extremely rare: No copy of this edition in the NCC!!!  In fact extremely few early copies in Dutch of this book are known. Content (16p);220;2p (Besluyt). Size 15,5 by 9,5cm. In 1606 Dou produced the first translation of Euclid from Latin into Dutch. This is an important book e.g. used by scientists and the military of the time. On the internet many references to the book and Dou can be found.Overall a complete copy of an extremely rare and important book. EU buyers to add 6% VAT / BTW to the price.

Description

In the 17th and 18th century every town in Holland started to document  its history. The book offered is the most important decription of the town of Amersfoort in The Netherlands by Abraham van Bemmel (Amersfoort 1703- Amersfoort 1785).  Content: (20), 454; (2) ,457-1018,(8)p plus 8 folding prints (etchings) and one full page print all by Paul  van Liender. Van Bemmel is a member of a local magistrate family and had first hand access to the towns archives. He was born in the beautiful house 't Zand 39 (next to the Sint-Aagten chappel) that still exists.
