It contains the first biography of Kaempfer, an account of his journey, a history and description of Japan and its fauna, a description of Nagasaki and Deshima; a report on two embassies to Edo [Tokyo] with a description of the cities which were visited on the way; and six appendices, on tea, Japanese paper, acupuncture moxa, ambergris, and Japan's seclusion policy' (op. cit., VII, p. 205).  Size 10 by 17cm .Contents 3 vol. in-12, [2]-LXX-[2]-312, [6]-416, [4]-379-[17] p. with 13 large (several 40 by 40cm) multiple folding plans and maps. Palaestina ex monumentis veteribus illustrata

Description A detailed geographical survey of Palestine written in Latin and with beautiful maps and in the original full vellum binding. The book shows that by the end of the 17th century Palestine was primarily  inhibited by Jews and Christians, this is also reflected in the names of the towns and villages. Very rare 1716 Nürnberg edition of the Palaestina ex Monumentis book, but with the same fine maps as the less rare 1714  Utrecht edition by Brodelet. This is probably the only copy of the Nuremberg edition that is being offered by an antiquarian shop!!   Contents (14);787;register;13 fine maps/tables. Size 20,5 x 16,5 cm. Full vellum binding. Adriaan Relandwas  born  1676 in  De Rijp in the Netherlands he died 1718, he was an important scholar, cartographer and philologist. He was a professor of philosophy at the university of Harderwijk  and from 1701 onwards he was professor of Oriental languages at the University of Utrecht (he was fluent in Hebrew, Arabic and the classical languages). He also taught Hebrew antiquities and was acclaimed for his painstaking studies of Islam and linguistic research. His journey encompassed 2500 sites mentioned in the Bible, Mishna and Talmud. He began by mapping Eretz Israel, employing plane-table topography, triangulation and a sextant for an extremely accurate map.... He then identified each and every site mentioned in the Bible, Mishna and Talmud with the source of its name. If it was a Jewish source, he quoted the appropriate text from Scripture. If the place name was Roman or Greek in origin, he supplied the source for those. He also conducted a census of each such habitation: Not one place in Eretz Israel has a name that originates in Arabic. Place names are Hebrew, Greek or Roman (Latin), that were given meaningless Arabic derivations. Akko, Haifa, Yafo, Nablus, Gaza or Jenin have no meaning in Arabic, and city names like Ramallah, Al-Khalil and Al-Quds lack historic or philological Arab roots. In 1696, the year of the survey, Ramallah was called Bt’ala, Hebron was Chevron, and the Cave of the Machpela was Al-Khalil, Arabic for patriarch Avraham. The country was a wasteland. Its few inhabitants were concentrated in cities like Jerusalem, Acre, Safed, Jaffa, Tiberias and Gaza. Most of the city folk were Jewish or Christian, and only a few Muslims, usually Bedouins. Nablus was an exception, home to some 120 Muslims and 70 Samaritan. Nazareth capital of the Galilee, was inhabited by 700 Christians. Some 5000 people lived in Jerusalem, most of them Jews. Interestingly, Muslims are mentioned only as nomadic Bedouins, who served as seasonal agriculture and construction workers. The population of Gaza was equally divided between Jews and Christians. The Jews raised grapes, olives and wheat, while the Christians were occupied in commerce and transportation of goods. Safed and Tiberias also had Jewish communities, but the only occupation mentioned is fishing in the Sea of Galilee. A city like Um-al-Fahm, for example, is mentioned as a small village consisting of 10 Christian families, with a small Maronite church." Thus, the main testimony of this survey is that the area referred to as "Palestine" was virtually empty, except for settlements of Jews and few Christians. The book contents  is frequently quoted in the debate regarding the Israeli/Palestien conflict. . Another famous publication by Reland  (not offered by us) is the "De religione Mohammedica libri duo" which is the  first European work to attempt to describe the Islamic religion in a relatively objective way, and was published published in 1705
Condition Condition: Some small unimporant tears were the maps are connected to the book. 2 small pieces missing from the blank margin of the title (to remove stamps or signatures?) in original vellum binding. Overall a (very) good copy of the very rare Nuremberg edition of this very interesting book.

Description  Extremely rare and beautiful book on the invention of the fire engine by van der Heiden. He was an inventor, a very good painter and a fireman, this book brings out all his good qualities. After inventing the first method to provide efficient streetlighting he went on to invent the fire engine after experimenting for many years with different pumps. In this book he not only gives a detailed description of his invention  but also a chronicle of the most spectacular fires during his time as a fireman in Amsterdam. His descriptions are technically accurate but also very well describe the human drama involved in the fires. We are offering the extremely rare second and best edition on large paper. Contents: typographical title with vignet; on the blank reverse a large manuscript notation that this book was donated to the town of Rotterdam by Adolph Stover Coster as a present in 1864; Opdracht 4p; Privilege 2p; 50p Title with engraved vignette and 19 (of which 7 double page) engravingsthe 6 additional plates;one text page with an index to the extra plates.Size 46,5 by 28 cm (large folio).  Important innovative work on the use of fire-fighting equipment . Amsterdam, Heirs of Jan van der Heiden, 1735. Binding contemporary vellum. The book was written and the prints were produced by by the inventors Jan van der Heiden Sr. and Jr. (superintendent of the Amsterdam fire brigade) It describes and illustrates the use of the new fire-fighting equipment, invented, patented and manufactured by the Van der Heidens. The developed and enhanced a pumping system to get the water direclty out of the canal without using manual hosing. The new invention was much admired all over Europe, and was introduced into England under the reign of William and Mary. The first edition of the work was published in 1690, but the present second edition is much preferred as it contains an added section with 6 full-page plates, of which four show demonstrations with the improved fire-engine. The fine and spectacular plates show the most destructive fires at Amsterdam between 1652 and 1684, the fires before 1672 being fought with the old fire-engines, and those after 1672 being fought with the Van der Heyden equipment, some plates also showing the old and the new apparatus working together for comparison. Several plates also show burnt-out buildings to illustrate how much less damage was done when the new equipment had been used. Plate 15 shows the huge fire in the famous publishing establishment of Blaeu.  Click on the photo and use "<" button below to see all the photos!

Author / Publisher Jan Swammerdam (1637-1680) / Leyden, I. Severinus, B. and P. van der Aa, 1737/ 1738
Title Bybel der Natuure, of Historie der Insecten. Biblia Naturae; sive Historia Insectorum, in classes certas redacta, nec non exemplis, auctoris descripsit Hermannus Boerhaave Latin transl. H.D. Gaubius

Description JAN SWAMMERDAM (1637-80), Dutch naturalist and microscopist; pioneer of entomology and discoverer of red blood cells. He studied medicine at Leiden, and despite his short life and a professional career of only about twelve years, Swammerdam was one of the outstanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. He was a pioneer in microscopic studies, investigating especially the anatomy of insects, his system of classification laid the foundations of entomology. At his death after seven years of illness and scientific activity, he left a mass of papers and reports of investigations, most of which remained unknown until they were published a century later. Considered the most accurate of classical microscopists, Swammerdam was an educated and highly systematic worker who confined his attention to studying relatively few organisms in great detail. Over the period of about six years he devoted much of his energies to exhaustive entomological research. He employed highly innovative techniques; for example, he injected wax into the circulatory system to hold the blood vessels firm, he dissected fragile structures under water to avoid destroying them, and he used micropipettes to inject and inflate organisms under the microscope. Swammerdam's A General History of Insects, was widely recognized as a major work at the time, and in his magnum opus, Bybel der Natuure, he advanced his entomological researches and produced one of the finest collections of microscopical observations ever published. Swammerdam's great work, the Bybel der Natuure, was left unpublished at his death. The manuscript of this, his most important work, passed through several hands before Herman Boerhaave having learned of its existence sought to acquire it. Boerhaave was aware of Swammerdam's genius and determined to acquire his great unpublished book and see it safely through the press. He edited the manuscript and arranged for it to be published 1737/8 in a fine edition of 2 folio volumes, with dual Dutch and Latin text, beautifully printed with titles in red and black, with engraved vignettes, head- and tail-pieces, and 53 fine engraved plates.  "The scientific ambition represented by Bybel der Natuure is astonishing. Even today it shocks by its audacity. In its scope and depth, Swammerdam's work far exceeded any other book of the time", and laid the foundations of modern biology. It is the "finest one-man collection of microscopical observations", and the book is consulted by naturalists to this day.   Folio. 2 text vols. and 1 plate vol., text vols.: (62),550[=546]; (4),551-910,(36 index), 124(uitlegging der tafereelen)p., engr. title-vignettes, Latin and Dutch juxtaposed text, plate vol.: 53 engr. plates (52 fold.) by J. Norman Library 2037: "Despite a scientific career that lasted only a dozen years, Swammerdam was one of the outstanding comparative anatomists of the seventeenth century. His most remarkable work was in the field of insect anatomy, which he undertook in order to disprove still-current Aristotelian notions (which he opposed upon religious grounds) that insects lack internal anatomy, develop by metamorphosis (sudden and complete transformation) and arise from spontaneous generation. By refining his techniques of micro-dissection and injection to the point where he could use them on the smallest and most delicate anatomical parts, Swammerdam was able to illustrate for the first time the complex internal structures of insects, including their reproductive organs; and to demonstrate the gradual development of an insect's adult form throughout all its larval stages. These observations are "indubitably the foundation of our modern knowledge of the structure, metamorphosis and classification of insects" (Cole, p.285). In addition, Swammerdam performed valuable investigations of crustaceans, mollusks and frogs, and was the first to prove experimentally that muscles do not increase in bulk when contracted via nerve stimulation. The Biblia naturae, Swammerdam's major work, was published fifty-seven years after his death by Herman Boerhaave, who assembled it from unpublished manuscript materials integrated with a slightly revised version of Swammerdam's Historia insectorum generalis (1669). Boerhaave's biography of the author, which prefaces the work, remains the chief published source of information about Swammerdam's life. The book's fifty-three copperplates were prepared under Swammerdam's direction from his own drawings."
